It’s rather difficult to find unique bonsai pots here in New Zealand, and relatively expensive to get them over from Japan due to their weight (and price)… So we’ve got stuck into some clay and started making our own pots, and it has been a great deal of fun. Below are pics of a few pots made thus far. Some have been custom orders for other people’s trees, and some I’ve made specifically for trees in our own collection. If you’d like a custom pot made for your tree, get in touch: design@bioattic.co.nz (as yet haven’t attempted any large pots – over 40cm in length, but working on it).
FLUTED ROUND
Commissioned for a friend’s Juniper. Finished in a Dark Iron Oxide. Measurements: 20cm w x 8cm h.
Detail of feet and Seal. If it has this seal, you know it’s a pot made by Adrian Bird.
GLAZED RECTANGLE
Experimented with layering glazes on this one, with great results. Measurements: 30cm w x 7cm h.
RUSTIC TEXTURED WRAP-AROUND
This is my favourite piece to date, made for an old Pine. Dark Red Iron Oxide finish. The stone texture and iron oxide finish will compliment the Pine’s rough bark. Currently making more pots in similar style. Measurements: 32cm w x 9cm h.

BLUE FOOTED OVAL
A little oval with blue over cream glaze, nicely suited to a shohin flowering species. Measurements: 20cm w x 6cm h.
SMALL CHING-PAI OVAL
Another little oval with ching-pai glaze, managed to get a nice random finish to the glaze. Measurements: 18cm w x 6cm h.
RUSTIC ORGANIC ROUND
This organic round pot has feet loosely inspired by lotus style pots. The glaze was another experimental mix of layers, really happy with the result. Made for a literati/bunjin style, taller tree. Measurements: 24cm w x 11cm h.
